NuPhy Air 60 V2

Introduction to Programmable Keyboards

I dove into the world of programmable keyboards, comparing my experience with an Apple keyboard to the NuPhy Air 60 V2. While the Apple keyboard wasn't inherently bad, I noticed some ergonomic issues, particularly with reaching keys like Enter and Backspace with my right hand. This constant wrist movement was causing me problems, especially during long programming sessions.

The game-changer was discovering the NuPhy Air 60 V2's programmability. Using the VIA configurator through a web browser (via WebUSB), I was able to completely remap keys to create a more ergonomic typing experience. One of the coolest features I implemented was "home row modifications" - where holding down certain keys like F or J temporarily turns them into modifier keys like Shift, while tapping them still produces their normal character. This significantly reduced unnecessary hand movement and improved comfort.

Pros

  • Easy programming through browser-based VIA configurator

  • Affordable price point at around $110

  • Customizable key mapping for better ergonomics

  • Home row modifications capability

Cons

  • Requires downloading JSON file for configuration (temporary limitation)

  • Initial learning curve for programming

  • Smaller form factor might take getting used to

  • Some modifier keys are tiny
